Alonissos

Alonissos is an island in the Sporades chain, which also includes Skiathos and Skopleos.

Alonissos is covered in pine and oak forests and surrounded by a marine park making the sea some of the cleanest in the Mediterranean and home to the protected Monk seal. Both sandy and pebbly beaches provide plenty of opportunities for swimming and snorkelling.

Alonissos is less touristy than its counterparts, retaining a magical quality appealing to writers, artists, musicians, walkers, sailors and those who like a glimpse of the past with their modern amenities. You can still see locals in more traditional dress, working donkeys and mules, goats, and fishermen. Their are many tavernas, bars, and excellent restaurants, and some lovely shops.

Visitors to the island have included many of the rich, famous and most powerful people in the world some of whom have made their summer homes here, but most people are simply here to enjoy the walking, swimming and relaxed pace of life. There is a  large and varied ex-pat community, so English is spoken by many of the locals.

The villa is situated in Hora or old village, set on a hillside with wonderful views a couple of kilometres from the port of Patitiri. The village has its own shops and tavernas but is car-free in the old part where the villa is.

Alonissos is reached by charter flight from many European cities to Skiathos. From there take a ferry, lasting between 30 and 90 minutes depending on where/whether it stops on Skopelos. There are also direct flights from Athens to Skiathos.

For the more adventurous, there is a beautiful journey by coach from Athens to the mainland ferry ports of Volos or Aghios Konstantinos . There is also a ferry from Thessaloniki to the islands in high season and buses from Thessaloniki to Volos.

There is already a sea-plane service between Volos and Skiathos, and recent reports suggest there will be a sea-plane service from Athens and/or Volos to the island at some point in the near future. There is a helipad on the island for private helicopter charters.
